The Fight Over The Opium at The Golden Triangle

In the last quarter of 1966, as a colonel in the Myanmar Intelligence Unit, Khun Sa ordered his people to transport 60 tons (60,000 Kiligrams) of his goods in two caravans, The first caravan proceed towards Mae Sai, a burdar district of Thailand, through Tha Khi Lek. The second one moved toward to the Mae Khong river of Ban Kwan in Laos through Muang Pong, a Myanmar tambon sharing the border line with Amphoe Chiang Sean, Thailand. The goods included jade, other gem stones, ivory, raw opium, processed opium and heroin. Unfortunately, the two caravans were attacked and captured. The first caravan was captured by the Myanmar troops while the other as attacked by the Unnanese troops of the 93th Army (Unit 3 and 5). The goods captured by the Unnanese troops were later captured by the Laotian troops led by General Oun, the commander in-chief of the Laotian Air Force at that time. At the same time, Khun Sa was also captured by the Myanmar police in Tong Khi. This is the greatest betrayal in opium trade circles in the Golden Triangle.
